Thomas Tuchel Desires Bellingham's Fire Provided The Three Lions' Star Sets Aside Egotism at the Door.
A single omission did the trick. A second one and it might have appeared spiteful from the England manager, a coach who is much too clever not to realize that securing World Cup glory is probably going to require the involvement of the talented midfielder, although it is equally up to the player to blend into the strategic frameworks and squad hierarchies required with England now that he is back in the manager's supportive environment.
The manager seeks the player's competitive fire, his passion, but it is about using it constructively. Skill is important but England have learned the hard way that there is consequences when stardom dominates. Nevertheless, a point has been made.
Bellingham was given food for thought after his omission of last month’s squad. He observed the national side book their place at the tournament without him. He watched Morgan Rogers shine as a high-pressing No 10. He listened as the coach talk about appreciating the team's dynamism and ethics. Inevitably, Bellingham has reacted in winning fashion, netting important strikes for his club against Barcelona and the Italian side. His selection was inevitable; leaving him out again would have made his squad place precarious.
The hope is that Tuchel will have a midfielder focused on frightening rivals instead of his own colleagues. After all, in purely sporting terms, there is little benefit to starting a conflict with an elite performer in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time on the sidelines has made him realize that an international career is a valuable, uncertain thing. Tuchel, for his part, can now provide cover around the youngster after showing that he is unafraid to drop big names.
“There is no problem regarding him, and no concern about his personality,” Tuchel said. “Bellingham possesses the edge. You need a sharp mentality to succeed at the top that he has. Everyone must support him and build an environment which he can [have] his drive towards opponents and in pursuit of success we are striving for as a team.”
Bellingham dominated the spotlight at the team news conference for this month’s final group games against one opponent and the other. Any other news? Well, what about another talent? This is a further gifted No 10 requiring support and direction. He has not played for the national team since March and has struggled to reach his best this year but Tuchel had to consider the player after his display in the Champions League match versus Borussia Dortmund this week.
The question, though, is the best way to deploy the various creators at England’s disposal. Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze merit inclusion and there will be a strong case to include another youngster once he overcomes a fitness issue. Is selecting five No 10s to the World Cup be excessive? Gareth Southgate never found the correct balance at Euro 2024. He made concessions by forcing both stars into the starting lineup, cramping the captain's influence as a result.
It seems unlikely the current manager repeating that if it hurts the team harmony. There is room for a single playmaker, with fast wide players on the flanks. Clarity is beneficial. Bellingham is selected as a No 10. The new call-up, selected for the first time, is a No 8 and the returning Adam Wharton will compete with Elliot Anderson as a No 6. There will also be no wide role for the City star, who must play through the middle. The coach prefers him near Kane. “It is illogical to tell Foden: ‘We want you on the pitch but there’s no space on your best position, could you fill in at left wing? Or the right wing?” he said. “Phil is to feature in the central attacking zone, in the middle of the pitch. I have this vision regarding him for a long time. I think it fits his style the most.”
He conceded there are times when the player has appeared uncomfortable in an national jersey. “One senses almost like, ‘Is he truly happy? And a player like him who has obvious passion to play football, then obviously something is not right, be it the position, the setup, it's unclear.
“I think he is additionally accustomed to playing for his club in a particular setup, with a clear task. Believe he benefits a lot from clarity. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly should I turn? When should I to push the tempo? What are my to defend?
Tuchel discussed Bellingham making runs for easy finishes and Foden scoring strikes from outside the box. He said he has a longlist of 60 players. Several players, Myles Lewis-Skelly, the goalkeeper and the midfielder have dropped out. A new face is rewarded for his excellent performances for City at left-back. Intrigue abounds.
Leaving out of Ollie Watkins means there is no direct replacement for the captain in the selection. Interestingly, he suggested deploying Foden as a false 9 versus one opponent or the other. Other options, the United forward, Bellingham and the winger are other options if Kane be unavailable. With qualification secured, this is an opportunity for a little experimentation.
At the same time, it is also a moment to get the understanding with his teammate flowing. It's surprising that one must look back to the latter assisting Kane to net in an international match versus Scotland in over a year ago to discover the sole instance in many appearances for the national team when the duo combined for a score. Tuchel will know that the two stars only exchanged the ball a single time during England’s draws with one opponent and Slovenia at the European Championship. Their partnership is lacking.
“This is where eventually it becomes the responsibility of the players,” Tuchel stated. He does not shy away to be blunt. Remains a sense of the player under scrutiny. He cannot even be guaranteed to start versus Serbia and Albania. The manager desires him committed but he will be monitoring him carefully. Leave self-importance at the door. It will make a very strong squad into an more effective one.
