One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is exiting the directorate at OpenAI, just a week after a collection of electronic messages between him and notorious criminal the disgraced billionaire became public.

The economist commented in a statement that he was "grateful for the opportunity to have participated, enthusiastic about the prospects of the company, and anticipate observing their progress".

The prominent academic, who formerly led the prestigious university, announced on recently that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

The freshly disclosed communications revealed that the economist communicated with Jeffrey Epstein until the eve of his 2019 apprehension for accused human trafficking of underage individuals.

In additional comments, the artificial intelligence company stated it accepted Summers' determination to depart.

Following Summers' statement on Monday, the Washington think tank, a liberal research organization in DC where the professor was a prominent member, confirmed that he was no longer connected with the group.

Summers joined the leadership of the technology firm, which makes the AI chatbot, in last year - following a failed attempt to replace its chief executive Sam Altman.
