‘Every minor detail – execute them’: The striker’s road from injury table to scoring with the Basque club

Thehe debut appearance Gorka Guruzeta competed in the UK, an teenage representing the youth squad against Bundesliga youth at Adams Park in September 2015, he found the net. During his subsequent match he took the field in British turf, against Sunderland weeks after, he converted. The third time, against Manchester City soon after, indeed, he did it once more. When he returned to the city to face United at Leigh Sports Village in that year, he did it once more. An excellent finish, as well. “Actually,” he says, “it ranks among my finest I’ve netted.” Thus the club did what was necessary: he was replaced.

“I was furious,” the attacker admits, before breaking into laughter. “Probably there’s a recording. Our match against United and I was in fine form. They kept me out of the latter period: I hadn’t yet signed deal, I was scoring goals, speculation was rife, as you’d expect. I’m unsure regarding interest from Newcastle, but I remember reading about Manchester United, the usual talk. I’m not certain if it was accurate, but even if they had called, my desire was to remain at the club. I feel lucky to be here.”

Real Sociedad release pressure with surreal victory in Basque derby like no other

At the facility, the Basque Country, the day’s first practice is ready to commence; after it, the quick travel to the airport and a further journey to the UK, on this occasion to play Newcastle in the UCL on Wednesday. Just saying those two words makes Guruzeta smile. This is proving a challenging campaign for Athletic, due in part to the demands of being here. Defeated late on in the weekend clash, they have managed just one win of their past eight league games and been defeated by Arsenal and Dortmund in Europe. However, consider the broader view, the big nights he has lived and upcoming events, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation about him.

In the 36 months since he had come back to Athletic, Gorka has been a semi-final participant, stopped at the gates a final at home by the English giants, and has boarded a decades-old barge along the Nervión river surrounded by countless supporters after securing the Spanish cup, the team’s initial silverware in four decades. Now he is Athletic’s top scorer in the European competition, where they are unique and making their first appearance in a decade. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he says.

He considered it challenging enough just to earn a spot and he was right. The son of the ex-La Real star Xabi Guruzeta and a dedicated fan at the team he now opposes, Gorka is a graduate of Antiguoko, the local academy that produced Mikel Arteta, the former star and the tactician. He joined Athletic at seventeen but after making his senior debut in that summer, he went through a serious knee problem, being released, a demotion and a recall before he could truly get a chance, making his comeback to live the best days of his career.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta aims to take on Newcastle in the European competition.

“You go into the academy thinking you won’t reach the top level but with every stage you advance through you’re persisting and you can notice the proximity. You arrive and then … departure is necessary.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in six games between his bow and February 2019. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches with them and my knee gave way.

“A severe disappointment but I look back on it as a turning point because it shifted the way I saw things. Healing from a serious ailment is challenging, but it helps. You develop habits new to you. It’s not about neglect, but I did the sessions and then go home, typical youth behavior. At Lezama, all resources are available, so take full advantage. Work, precaution. Strength training. With hip imbalance, work on that. If your ankles are a 10, enhance it further. Every small aspect: execute them.

“In the first team you’re going to crash into players who have been in battles countless occasions. Extremely powerful. Seeing previous pictures: I had slender legs. Thus incidents occur. Present-day images and the change is dramatic. Injury made me see that. Training finishes, but additional work remains. Everyone else is ready, really ready; the same applies.”

Minutes are crucial. The striker moved emotionally in that year, in his early twenties, moving to a lower level. With Sabadell in 2020-21, he got three strikes in numerous matches. During his Amorebieta stint in the following period, the he found his form. “It’s a common path: transfers, releases. With a turnaround, effort, faith, and if one day they need someone where you play, recall is possible. Preparation is key. When they decided to call again, a fantasy realized. Lifting the cup, European football, and make the UCL … pfff.”

Little surprise he states savor the moment. Especially after the previous season which, at times, was about endurance. After being leading scorer with a high tally, last season he got seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
