Chelsea's Manager Maresca Describes Pre-Match Period as The 'Most Difficult 48 Hours' with the Blues

Chelsea tactician Enzo Maresca stated that the preparation to the weekend's triumph against Everton constituted "the most challenging 48 hours" of his tenure at Stamford Bridge.

The Italian made a rather mysterious comment in his post-match interview despite securing a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge courtesy of goals from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.

Those three precious points sent Chelsea once again into the English top flight's top four, perhaps lightening the atmosphere following a loss to Atalanta in the Champions League that had stretched the team's drought without a win to consecutive outings.

However, when questioned about Gusto's contribution and general display, Maresca surprisingly divulged his annoyance over the previous 48-hour period within the organization.

"How the players are eager to learn has been fantastic and this is the explanation why I commend them - because with numerous challenges, they are doing very well after a tricky week," he stated.

"Since I joined the club, the last 48 hours have been the worst because a lot of people withheld support from us."

When pushed further on the specifics, the former Leicester City manager added: "Most difficult 48 hours since I joined the club because people failed to back me and the team."

When asked if he meant people internally at Chelsea, he responded: "Broadly speaking. Overall," before clarifying when queried if it was directed towards fans or the media: "I adore the fans and we are extremely content with the fans."

Fitness & Suspension Woes

Maresca also highlighted Chelsea's ongoing fitness and disciplinary issues, noting they had been missing key forward Cole Palmer for a large portion of the campaign, as well as being deprived of key midfielder Moises Caicedo to a three-match ban and forward Liam Delap to a couple of serious injuries.

"I really commend the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, five of them without Moises Caicedo, eleven of them minus Cole Palmer, almost all of them minus Liam Delap," he explained.

"And this squad, no matter who is on the pitch, they are doing brilliantly. Today was five games in 12 days so certainly when you see Cole Palmer there, we said many times that he's our finest player but we play the vast majority of the season without our top player.

"We play five games in the Premier League without Moises Caicedo. This is the explanation why I'm so happy for the players and it's something that I would want people externally to acknowledge because the commitment from the players is remarkable."

Chelsea's success over Everton cemented their standing in 4th place in the Premier League table, with a Carabao Cup quarter-final clash at Cardiff and a league journey to Newcastle scheduled in the coming days.

Uncertainty Over Maresca's Remark

It was unclear what exactly caused Maresca to label the past 48 hours as the most difficult of his tenure as Chelsea manager.

In that window, the coach had returned with his staff and players from Bergamo, held a training session at Cobham, faced a pre-game press briefing where he appeared relaxed, and secured a win over an in-form Everton team.

It was not obvious whether any particular media reports had unsettled him, if social media discourse were a factor, or if it was something more significant from within the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca specifically took care to deny that it was an matter involving the club's supporters, some of whom have not yet fully warm to him since his arrival from Leicester during July 2024.
