Three police officers perished and no fewer than 15 others were hurt in what appears to be intentional gas explosion at a farmhouse in Italy's north.

How It Happened

The blast took place as officers and emergency crews approached the house in the vicinity of Verona to enforce an eviction order for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.

The three deceased individuals served in the Carabinieri force.

Arrests and Aftermath

A man and a woman were arrested at the site and another man who escaped subsequent to the incident was found not long after. The trio have been admitted to medical facility.

The explosion could be noticed some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the scene showed the structure turned into a heap of debris.

“We are in a period of mourning,” commented the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who added that efforts had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.

Background and Motive

The president of the Veneto area, the regional head, said the property was under an removal notice due to financial obligations accumulated by the property owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been sent to engage the siblings who had secured themselves into the property. When the Carabinieri reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think one of the siblings caused the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander the police commander told the media.

A gas canister had been activated, and the explosion precisely impacted our members,” he explained.

Petrol bombs were also found at the property, the interior minister stated.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the explosion consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as three members of the state police and a emergency responder.

According to the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had no electricity.

The prosecutor thought the detonation had taken place on a floor above the entrance and informed the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Moments before the incident, he mentioned personnel had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the gas canisters being turned on”.

Local Response

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents informed reporters, mentioning that the three had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto stood alongside other government officials in honoring the trio of personnel who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
